Spring 2024 What to See on/off Broadway: Little Shop of Horrors

Looking for something to do in New York City? Consider a magical evening in the heart of NYC at the West Side Theater, followed by dinner at The Purple Tongue. A friend and I had the pleasure of catching a performance of “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Westside Theater, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight! The energy, the talent, the sheer joy radiating from the stage—it was so much fun.

And let me tell you about a special treat: Camryn Hampton stepping into the role of Audrey as the understudy for Evan Rachel Wood. It was a beautiful reminder of the incredible talent and versatility within the theater community. Plus, seeing a Black Audrey and a white Seymour added an adorable dynamic to the classic storyline. I couldn’t help but hope that theaters will continue to embrace color-blind casting, not just for understudies, but as a standard practice.

But the magic didn’t end there! Corbin Blue, yes, THE Corbin Blue, led a captivating conversation with the cast about the experience of being Black in theater today. As a longtime New Yorker, I’ve witnessed the slow but steady shift in the industry’s perception of Black actors, and it’s truly heartening to see progress being made. Hearing the actors share their hopes and dreams for the future left me feeling inspired and hopeful.

My preference is to always have dinner after a Broadway show instead of before. This gives you an opportunity to debrief and chat about the show, its nice to hear everyone’s thoughts. NYCeCe Pro Tip: the post-show rush in Manhattan is typically less hectic than the pre-show dinner rush. After the show, we stumbled upon the charming Purple Tongue Wine Bar & restaurant, conveniently located right across from the theater. Despite its unassuming exterior, this cozy spot stole our hearts with its big personality and even bigger flavors. I indulged in the most delectable polenta and braised short ribs, paired perfectly with a glass of wine from their impressive selection. It was the ideal way to unwind and savor the post-show buzz.

If you’re in search of a lovely night out in NYC, look no further than this unforgettable combination of theater magic and culinary delights. Trust me, it’s an experience that wont let you down! 🌟✨
