Remembering My Dreams…

Langston Hughes asked: What happens to a dream deferred? in his poem, Harlem… My deferred dream is performing and over the past month, I’ve been reminded of it in some fun ways.

I was asked to be in a workshop of a new musical at NYU and I sang in a charity Christmas concert on the Lower East Side.

It felt amazing to do what I love…

I’ve always been a dreamer… if I imagine something in my head, I don’t mind working hard to make it happen even if it seems crazy (#PSPfit is a good example of that lol). I have new dreams which is exciting, but there are still old dreams of mine that I’m not ready to let go of, even if they’re more complicated.

If any of you are plus size performers, you know how hard it can be. I touched on that in “Fat Girl Flashback: You Can’t Play That Part“. Unfortunately, dreams of performing often lay in the hands of casting directors and agents. The casting agents I met often felt that my weight overshadowed my talent. Ouch.

With the New Year coming, I’ve been thinking a lot about my dreams and goals. I have a few things I’m passionate about I need to figure out which of them I absolutely have to go after.

I’ve been asking myself: What do I want? What have I given up on? What am I afraid of?

Tough questions that definitely won’t be answered in one blog post, but I feel like I have to start remembering my dreams and using them to make a roadmap for my life… *sigh* growing up is hard!

Do you have dreams you’ve put on hold? Or dreams you’re revisiting?

  1. This post is very timely for me. I’ve been thinking about how unattainable some of my dreams seem–but then reminding myself that they’re 100% more unattainable if I’m too timid to pursue them.

Being too timid is something I struggle with too… Every time I take a chance I never regret it though 😉

Very encouraging. My dream deferred is more of me not taking care of myself first in order to be good for everyone else. That has changed. Focusing on me will allow me to be better for others.

  7. Hi CeCe! I used to act in plays when I was younger and one of the reasons I moved to the NYC metro area after getting my masters was to get my feet wet acting. I am a plus size diva and I have submitted for a few things with no results. Kind of disappointing, but as much as it hurts, I am even more determined to make it happen. After watching the beautiful Amber Riley perform on DWTS, I am assured that things will change and work in favor of plus size women. I am a go-getter and from reading your posts you are too. Keep at it! This is the season for grace and favor!!!!!

  11. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this topic to be really something which I think I would never understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me. I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!

  12. You are definitely correct, I’d really enjoy to discover new info on the issue! I am also interested by traffic ticket since I believe it truly is very trendy right now. Keep up the good work!
