Plus Size Holiday Dresses: New Years

I’m not sure what I’m doing for New Years, but I know I want to look amazing doing it.

I’ve started browsing stores around the city and online looking for a fun party dress to ring in the new year. I’m seeing a lot of sequins in the stores but I don’t think that’s the look I’m going for. I don’t want to look like a disco ball but I do want something glamorous.

For me glamor comes from the way a dress is constructed or the fabric from which its made. Since I was avoiding the sequin route, I thought maybe satin or velvet would a good direction to go and I came across two satin party dresses on ShopTranslated.com. Shop Translated is a new plus size boutique, and the two dresses I ordered from them are both strong contenders to take me into 2011.

My first choice is from the Shop Translated INES collection and it’s a more demure cut. This dress is flattering and slimming and I like the way the skirt moves, but I think I may save it for a Christmas party I’m going to on Saturday and pair it with a black cardigan and fishnets. Although I like it, I think I want something a little sexier for New Years.

The second dress I ordered is a satin sleeveless wrap dress from their INES collection (right). This dress is so fun to wear! It hugs tightly on my upper torso and then flares out in an A-line which hides my tummy. The low-cut neckline makes my boobies look awesome without being too trashy and the wide paneling on the front is flattering on my arms.

The only thing I don’t like about this dress is that it has slits up the side. Because I wear Spanx with shorts to prevent chub-rub, I might have to stitch the slits closed so that my Spanx don’t show, but that’s an easy fix… which this dress is my number one choice so far.

These are my first two options for New Years… which one do you like best?

  1. I like the 2nd option because of the wrap top. It might just be me, but higher necked items like the top one always make me look more busty than I am.

    1. Emily, you are soooo right!

Also, my boobies feel suffocated in high necklines. (They like to steal the spotlight! lol)

  2. I’m gonna have to go with choice #2 only because I like the way it looks. And I also like the fact that it has a slit on the side. I’ve been doing a lil dress shopping to bring in the New Year as well so thanx for the site! Good luck!

  3. You will look amazing in both of these but I have to question the second dress. Is it a full wrap around? If you stitch it closed will you a)no longer be able to take it on and off OR b)make the satin pucker and look odd if you sew it because it is a PAIN to sew? I also really like the color choices for the season. You will stand out from the sea of holiday colors.

    1. @ Knight: I should have specified that this is a faux wrap dress, so stitching the slits on the side shouldn’t mess with the construction too much.

I do hear your point though about manipulating a fabric like this… hmmm, things to consider maybe I’ll just wear fishnets instead?

  4. I’m going to buck the trend and say dress #1. Everyone knows the deep-plunging wrap is the PSP’s friend, which is why a lot of girls will show up to the part wearing them (and have been for the last several years). I say that dress #1 has a newer, edgier style – glam it up with some awesome bracelets. Plus I think its fabric pattern is more edgy-glam for a hot NYC event.

  5. CeCe – I think you’ll be stunning in both! You have that amazing inner beauty that I’m confident even without having seen you, shines through no matter what you’re wearing!

I like the second for New Years and the first for the Christmas party like you mentioned.

I hope that you have a special holiday season – you deserve it. I’m looking forward to staying up on your life as you dominate 2011!

  6. the top one is gorgeous!
They’re both cute of course, but the last one looks like it’ll make you look a little older.
The first one is girly and young, so I’d go for that one 🙂

  7. The first dress is my first option. I love the pattern and color! Sewing up that slit would make dress number 2 SO much better. Either way it goes, you’ll look great!

  8. Both dresses are absolutely adorable! It’s a hard choice to make, especially as I’m someone who chooses at the last moment based on whatever mood I’m in. But I love the webstore you just introduced me to!

  9. Not to rain on your parade, as both dresses are very pretty, but…have you given much thought to how they photograph?

Personally when I was a big girl, I learned to shy away from any silk/satin fabric that has that shine to it. It can be *mortifyingly* unforgiving when the flash hits you.

  10. I think i prefer the first dress. It looks like a beautiful pale pink with a satin sheen and very alluring. The blue prints stand out on this pale colour plus it looks comfortable and can run places or maybe I am just not a big fan of wrap dresses 🙂

  11. I was inspired to buy a couple of dresses because of your post (the blue art-nouveau is so retro chic!). There sizes seem to be a little roomy, next time I’ll go a size down.

  12. I LOVE the 2nd one! Have fun. I should do this… I need help picking something out too. I am going to a Hollywood Red Carpet event plus celebreating my birthday and I want to look amazing too…. But being bigger I have to find the RIGHT dress! Good Luck! Glad I stumbled upon this blog!
