Plus Size Brazilian Wax & Spa Review (Spa Ja)

Remember when I went to Miami and got my first Brazilian Wax?

Well, getting waxed has slowly become something I do regularly. I like the hygienic benefits and with my active gym schedule (swimming, changing in public etc.), I like not having to worry about maintenance “down there”.

The first brazilian I got was at Completely Bare, a hair removal spa with locations all over New York City. The experience and process was stellar. If I had my way, I’d go to them every time. Unfortunately, Completely Bare is on the pricey side and CeCe’s on a budget so I’ve started exploring other places to get it done.

Last weekend I went to Spa Ja on 56th and 8th avenue for my brazilian. I’ve spoken before about being a Plus Size Princess with “nooks and crannies” (some might call them rolls). One of my initial fears about waxing was that my nooks and crannies would make the process uncomfortable. Thankfully, it hasn’t been an issue.

At Completely Bare, I just laid back and let the esthetician do her thing. At Spa Ja, the experience was a lot more “hands on”. The esthetician who gave me my wax had my lifting my lower belly, moving my fat to the left and right so that she could get rid of every single strand of hair.

The woman who did my wax was older with a thick Russian accent. For some reason that made me more comfortable putting my “little CeCe” in her care. She said she’d been waxing for most of her life and she had a process that worked for me. She used a combination of old school hot wax/paper strips and the new paperless self hardening wax. She also gave me some good advice on maintaining my brazilian.

“Ven een zee showah, uze cree-stahl soo-gah scrrrab” (translation: when in the shower, use crystal sugar scrub). She also advised me to use an oil based moisturizer down there to prevent dryness, but to avoid baby oil.

I rate my experience at Completely Bare a 10 and my Spa Ja experience is a 7.5 (mostly due to the ambiance). But at $55 , Spa Ja is a lot cheaper than Completely Bare. I’d definitely go back, but I’m going to check out a few other places first.

I’ll keep you posted!

    1. LOL @ Leslie… you can do it! Ask a lot of questions first and then take the plunge!!

Maybe you can surprise your hubby with it 😉

  1. hahahaha!’little cece’! I love it. 🙂 Glad to hear of some new places. The last time I had it done it was like your Spa Ja experience. However, it had been a long time and it hurt like a bitch! I haven’t been doing it because of the financial aspect but perhaps I’ll try Spa Ja. I wish there was such a thing as a less painful wax. I mean, my eyes were even watering. ugh. The things we women do.

    1. @ Single Much… The financial aspect of it is hard to figure out, but its worth it. I’ll try to email you some other budget friendly options 🙂 Also, the self hardening wax is a *little* less painful.

      No pain no gain? lol

  2. Perfect timing, I just got a coupon in the mail for a specialty wax place, they have a $20 first time customer special for a brazillian but I am so nervous! Any tips? I’ve heard you have to let the hair grow out a bit first, about how long does it last?

  3. I just got my first brazilian and I LOVED it. I was scared to go because I found horror stories written by fat women who went for Brazilians – many involving feeling very uncomfortable because of comments made by the professionals working with them.

In any case, I got mine “sugared.” It’s apparently less painful than waxing (I don’t know about that…), and it’s all natural. The paste is made from sugar, water and lemon juice. And I was completely bare down there.

I did end up paying $80 for it though. That’s a bit steep…but I’m definitely going to keep it up. I love not having razor bumps!

  4. Easy Peasy Brazilian, so much a fan. If you are up to traveling to Queens I suggest The Aveda Salon in the Queens Center Mall. Ask for Ruby, she is amazing and could care LESS about my flab. Also Rajni at Aveda is the QUEEN of eyebrow threading, it’s a must if you are heading out there. In Manhattan – Oasis in SoHo is fine, they too could not care about my body, but way more $$$.

  5. Everytime I think about my first wax I crack up. The first thing the woman kindly said to me was ok hold your tummy up
She said it nicely but it was hilarious!!

  6. I get mine done every 6 weeks on the dot. I get it all taken off, but on v day i left a little heart for my boyfriend, he loved it. I love waxing, it really keep you feeling fresh and new. My first experience was fine. I haven’t stoped in like 8 years. Sometimes I go 100% bare and sometimes I leave some on top.

  7. Sorry, but why would anyone want a brazilian wax job…ouch…Natural is so much more pleasing to the eyes. Moe my upper lip is still hurting.

  8. Could you forward that list of NYC options to me, as well? My birthday’s coming up and I’ve been thinking of trying a Brazilian (even tho’ I have this dread fear of lookin’ like a little girl – creeeepy. LOL). And do you happen to remember the name of the Russian lady at Spa Ja (which I’ve heard great things about from friends who go there).

Thanks for this [you brave soul]; I love knowing that someone out there is willing to take the plunge for us big girls!

  9. OUCH! That is all I’ve got to say… My skin is really sensitive down there and I feel like after the first Rip, I’ll make them stop, and end up having a hald brazilian done. Yikes that is scary.

  10. love your blog! had to write something after this post – you should check out the shobha salons if you haven’t already. it’s in your price range at $57 for a brazillian and every employee is super nice. additionally, they do the best and most relaxing eyebrow threadings i’ve ever had in my entire life.

looking forward to reading more from you! 🙂

  12. i know i am sooo late to this post but a brazilian wax is no joke! it is torture to me but worth it. i go 3-4 times a year and shave in between sprouts lol, i go to Tammy’s on 127th & Lenox, it’s onl $30 and she is excellent! very fast very nice and no one cares about the fat; she’s a little chubby herself. They also do eyelashes, threading and facials and henna. i’ve tried the sugaring (at a different salon) and although it was less painful, it took wayyy longer and i ended up swelling because she had to re-wax the same spots multiple times so i won’t be doing it there again! good luck ladies 🙂

  14. I am a plus size girl debating a brazilian for the first time. Anyone in the NYC area have a recommendation? I’ve always been too scared between pain and embarassment. However, you ladies have me thinking it’s okay!

  16. Hi CeCe I was wondering if you found anything in NYC that you like Spa Ja is now closed and I’d like try it – my first time. I’m a plus size girl as well.

  17. Thank you for the sensible critique. Me and my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I am very glad to see such wonderful info being shared freely out there.

  18. Howdy Partner. You look like the type of guy who needs to have a little fun. You can have all kinds of fun at http://camgirl.pw/ That’s the most exciting site on the internet. You’ll never experience a dull moment there. Go ahead, give it a try. Just remember to be on your best behavior. Cowboys can be rowdy. Try not to drink too much time at the saloon before heading on over there.
