I Use These Products For Healthy Sisterlocks

I’ve had my sisterlocks for five years this summer.

I’m not so good with dates, so I always remember that I went to the first Beyonce On the Run tour in 2014 with two tiny tester locks tucked into my wig and a week later I had my install at Sabine’s Hallway in Brooklyn. Sometimes Did I just admit that I keep track of my milestones against what Beyonce is up to? Don’t judge me lol

I have to say I am super happy with my hair right now.

My locs are at a good length where a bun, pony tail, braid crown is easily achievable. If you follow my different hairstyles on instagram, you also know that my side ponytail is becoming quite popular with my fan-friends too!

When I first got my sisterlocks, I remember being so worried about taking care of them. I was nervous that my sisterlocks would unravel, snap off, not lock or even worse… not grow as long as I wanted them to. Five years later, I know that my hair isn’t as delicate and fragile as it was that first year when I was locing.

Now that I’ve relaxed about my hair a bit I’m much more open to trying new products in my hair. Over the past few months I’ve been slowly testing new things to see what I like.

These are the products I use on my sisterlocks:

Water

When I got my sisterlocks installed I was waiting for a long list of products that I needed. If you’ve ever gone natural, you know about purchasing every oil, cream, mousse, etc. when you first let your curls go free… I was ready to do that all over again.

But Sabine, who did my install, only advised one product– water.

Drink lots of water, keep your hair hydrated from the inside out.

I was shocked, but she was right. In the first year, I didn’t say much about products because all I used was water. Overtime, I began adding infusions to my water like coconut oil. I sometimes use fancy water like:

Rose water spray (for moisture and shine)

Salt water spray (known to help hair lock faster)

You can choose these two options or start with plain water (which was enough for me). Water will always be my number one hair product.

I workout a lot and I sweat ALOT and I hate when I can smell the sweat wafting.

  3. Great read I just got mine installed 2 weeks ago and my Loctician said only water too
I saw online that essential oil such as lavender was good to mix in my water spray
Going to try that to see if it helps with itching 🤷🏾‍♀️
