I Tried Micro Needling. Here’s What Happened…

Let’s talk about skincare! I’ve been working really hard to feel good on the inside, now I’m looking at ways to feel good on the outside too. Whether it be taking part in the latest ‘skincare challenge,’ developing my own skincare routine, or simply drinking tons of water to keep my skin hydrated, I am constantly looking for new ways to take my skin to the next level. So I decided to give Microneedling a try!

What is Microneedling?

According to health.com, Microneedling, also known as Collagen Reduction Therapy, is a “skin-rejuvenation procedure in which tiny needles create punctures in the top layer of skin with the goal of improving overall texture and appearance.” Long story short, you’re taking the good stuff —collagen— from deep within your skin, and pulling it to the surface, treating discoloration, acne scarring, wrinkles, pore size and more.

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure, so you should consult with a dermatologist or licensed aesthetician to make sure that this treatment is best for you.

My dermatologist, the fabulous Dr. Michelle Henry, truly knows her stuff when it comes to the best skincare practices! I can tell her anything about my skin, and she will know exactly how to handle it and what products I should use. So when Dr. Henry suggested that I give Microneedling a try, I jumped at the opportunity.

Now, the idea of tiny needles puncturing my skin doesn’t sound fun…and it wasn’t. Microneedling pretty much felt like I was getting tiny staples in the face. It was one of the most intense things I’ve ever done, but hey, no pain no gain right? Luckily, Dr. Michelle Henry applies numbing cream to dull the pain, so I felt more pressure, instead of sharp pains.

For the last couple of months, I have been working with Dr. Michelle Henry on treatments, and I’m starting to see results. After just one round, I noticed a reduced pore size on the sides of my face, and the discoloration across my nose became less noticeable. For the best results, three rounds of Microneedling treatments are recommended, allowing time for your skin to heal and regenerate, giving a more radiant look.

What’s Next?

After talking with Dr. Michelle Henry, I’m thinking of trying a chemical peel and laser hair removal as my next steps. PCOS has been something that I’ve dealt with since high school. A common symptom that many women with PCOS experience is facial hair — a beard. This can be hard, especially when it feels like your femininity is being questioned. So as a teenager, I remember doing everything possible to remove the unwanted facial hair. Years of plucking and shaving left me with ingrown hair and scars from damaging my skin.

One thing that I always try to remember, is that skincare is a process. Nothing happens overnight. However, by taking the time to do your research, consulting with your dermatologist, coming up with a skincare routine, the ‘glow-up’ can happen!
