I Eat Too Much at Home

Happy Monday!

I’ve lost the ability to sleep in but I’m so happy to have the day off of work.

Usually a day off work means I can watch trashy daytime TV (“you are NOT the father!”) and hang out… with my refrigerator. Staying at home on a weekday can easily become a party with me, Maury and the fridge in heavy rotation. I’ll have breakfast, a snack, lunch, two more snacks and somehow I’ll make a light supper followed by a heavier one late at night (and there will be lots of picking and munching in between all of that).

Maybe its just me, but its hard to be at home and not eat.

On the other hand, when I’m at work I have a set amount of food and specific times to eat it. I pack my lunch most days, stock my desk with fruits, veggies, oatmeal and I keep low calorie frozen entrees in the office freezer for lunch.

When I’m at work, I don’t have access to my favorite foods and I’ve realized that a lot of my diet success (I’ve lost 15 pounds since January) is contingent on that.

I think my normal stay-at-home-and-eat behavior is based on boredom and I really don’t want to fall into those patterns today, so I’m planning to stay out of the house as much as possible.

When I’m done with this post, I’m going to make breakfast and then I’m going to take an afternoon yoga class. I’ll pack some apple slices, then hopefully I’ll meet a friend for lunch, do some shopping and come home for a normal dinner in the evening.

If all goes well, staying out of the house will keep me from eating my way through the day… wish me luck!

  1. The key is knowing about the potential pitfall and doing your best to avoid it. Sounds like you’ve got a good handle on it. And congrats on the loss! For me, the opposite scenario of what you described is true: I’m more likely to eat when I’m not home. I purposely keep a “clean” house. Foods I should not eat are not in the house. Therefore, if I really want to eat the unhealthy stuff, I have to make the effort to go out and get it. Everyone has their pitfall area; knowing what yours is can make all the difference.

  2. OMGoodness! I thought it was just me! I have this whole week off and most of my staycation plans revolve around what I making for breakfast and dinner (I may sleep through lunchtime). I also, usually eat little of the dinner I cooked early in the evening, but by 11pm, I headed back to the kitchen for a double portion.

    I don’t feel guilty about this, because like you said, when I am working I have a set schedule to eat and I usually don’t want to eat a whole lot (I usually don’t have the time to eat a whole lot).

    Great post! Now I am off to have my first snack of the day, a big bowl of Cap n Crunch.

  3. Don’t you get tired of restricting yourself constantly? Tired of constantly worrying about your weight? If you’re doing this strictly for health purposes, kudos to you, but sometimes I think you need to take a page from the following books…so to speak:

    Maybe you’ve already heard of these women. Either way, learn to love yourself no matter what size you are (I mean REALLY be okay with yourself). And stop saying “I want to shed this much weight by my next birthday/Christmas/friend’s wedding, etc.
