I Can’t Believe I Have to Say This

I’m a woman, I’m Fat and I’m black.

I speak out on all of those things, but last week when I used the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag, I was shaken when my “body positive” fans demanded an apology and threatened to unfollow me.

For me being body positive includes all parts of my body including my skin.

If you are ready to stand in solidarity for large bodies, but not black bodies we have a serious problem.

I can’t believe I have to say this…

I’m not here to explain to you why I say #BlackLivesMatter, you can read about that here.

If you have ever felt discriminated because of your size; forced to shop in basements, found it hard to get a job… or a date even. Then you know a tiny fraction of what those of us with brown skin are dealing with. Of course being irritated about lack of clothing options and dates is a walk in the park compared to fearing for you life.

If you’re passionate about Fat Activism and Body Positivity, but have an issue with “Black Lives Matter”, I don’t know if I can change your mind, but I can explain more to you about my experiences.

If you’re open minded and would like to understand why I feel the way I do, here are two stories that may help.

  1. CeCe, thank you for posting this. Being body positive is about all the ways we are affected by prejudice and discrimination. You experience this by being plus size as well as being black. I will never understand what it is to be a black person in America today but I feel for you so strongly, I can’t imagine the fear and difficulties you face on a daily basis. I believe that there is never an excuse for racism or murder. Black Lives Matter! It is so important to say and to believe. I support you and Black Lives Matter 100%.

  7. You nailed it! Thanks for speaking up for your rights. I know how hard it can be as a blogger, and to potentially lose fans. But they’ve got to like you for you…ALL of you, or else who needs them anyway if they threaten to leave when your people are being violated time and time again. Kudos sis.

  9. Hi CeCe,

I cannot believe it either. All lives matter. All people matter.

In these troubled times in America there has been numerous black deaths due to police behaviour, where it is clear that the police reaction would have been different if the men had been white.

In these times I think it’s perfectly normal for anybody, of any colour, to state on social media black lives matter.

Stating black lives matter does not invalidate other lives, it does not ask for them to be prioritised or anything else. It is however a call for equality and fairness for a situation which is not equal or fair for black people.

I’m not American. I’m not black. But I’m happy to state “Black lives matter”.

For those who are not happy to support this, I would like them to think of the poem “First they came” from Martin Neimoller.

“First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the Trade Unions
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Trade Unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me ”

    1. When posting the above I did not realise some people were using All Lives Matter as a hashtag instead of Black Lives Matter.

While I did say all lives matter I said it as a statement of fact, not as a banner.

I hope the rest of my post showed that while I believe all lives matter that the Black Lives Matter hashtag or banner is important now as this section of American society is suffering this injustice more than others.

And for those who say that more white people are killed by American police than black people, please educate yourself on the figures taking into consideration the % of population by verses the numbers.

    2. Thank you for posting this, Croi788. This was what I was looking for and did not find. I did not realize it was a poem, now I know the author as well. If you look a little closer, this mind set is what got us into the political situation we are now in with the choice of presidential candidates.

  11. Thank you Cece for your well thought out to ALL those who hated on you for stating #Blacklivesmatter.
I’ve been following you via your YouTube channel, and blog page for a few years now, and all I can say is you epitomize a woman of grace, class, beauty, and inclusion. Hence, your tireless support to the “Body Positivity” movement. Just because one supports Black Lives Matter, does not diminish ones support for All Lives Matter. One doesn’t CANCEL out the OTHER!!
The same can be said for supporting “Body Positivity”‘. Just because I love the skin I’m in, ( which so happens to be plus size) does not mean I love my Regular size sisters any LESS.
In closing, I too support you, and all the positive energy you have spread through your various social media platforms….Xoxo

CeCe, as an older Black Plus Size Woman I chose to follow you because of your positivity. Today’s society (to me) lacks the efforts of manners, and respect. You are who God designed you to be and for that reason alone you cannot apologize for who you are. I applaud you for standing your ground and continuing to stand as the Positive Black Woman you are. Forget being as you say “fat” you are black and Black Lives Do Matter!!

  23. Okay: I’m just going to play devil’s advocate here. Not that I don’t agree with you, I do but I feel that this sentiment also needs to be shared. All lives matter: no matter how young, old, shape or colour. However, the statement Black lives matter can be a fist in my stomach. I am a very pale Hispanic/Latino but I’ve been told that because I’m so pale, I’m not Hispanic. That I’m too white. Does that mean my life doesn’t matter as much as a black person’s because I’m not “brown”? Does that discount my fears for my family in Arizona for being asked for their green card but they were born in America? Look, I’m not going to get into the whole sexuality/gender/abortion/weight/etc debate right now. Not that those topics aren’t important. But #blacklivesmatter makes it seem like people are ignoring that ALL lives matter: the embryo, the elderly, the homosexual, the queer, the transgender, the black, the white, the Asian, the hispanic and countless more. Yet we praise assisted suicide and abortion : it’s still killing! But only those affected by the outright mass shootings and violence gets the hashtag. That’s my reason for not liking a hashtag. I’ll get off my tree stump now. #alllivesmatter

    1. Also, Cece, I agree with you and I will send my prayers your way. Thank you for this opportunity to discuss this topic that affects all of our lives.

    2. Leanna, I think you’re missing the point of the movement. It’s not to distance people with brown skin or blacks from the human race or say life is more important than another. The movement is fighting for the general oppression and underlying discrimination that people of that skin tone are faced. This has been a problem for more than 300 years. Of course every life matter but when a person is singled out and destroyed because of that skin tone it is time to stand up and stand together against that hatred. You are absolutely right that all lives matter but the movement in particular is calling out those who look to tear this group down. People protests and rally for all causes, homosexuality, religion, abortion, all the time. Why is it so different? This movement is focused on the injustice against these group of people who have always been targeted. There is nothing wrong with that focus. If you as a Latina wanted to get together with other Latino/Latina(s) and have your voice heard about injustice agains Latinos/Latinas that would be fine (which has been done). So why can’t Blacks do the same thing for ourselves? A hashtag on it is only for social media and a hashtag can be used for anything which people do daily. Your life matters just as much as anyone else. But consider all the ethnic groups of people throughout history (even if the last 65 years) who fought for injustice against the skin color or ethnicity. Why be confused when this is needed to happen again for change to occur?

    3. When we say “black lives matter” we mean “black lives matter too” as in “also”. Police somehow have forgotten that with their trigger happy ways. Also, it doesn’t take much to understand what we mean when we use the phrase “BLM,” you have to look besides your self important behavior and take a look around you. And as a Latina, you sound understand. WTH!

    4. Ms. Leanna, it is unfortunate that you have been told that your heritage is not what it is because of your skin color. It is your reality and it should not have happened to you. It is also unfortunate if you allowed such sentiments to sway who you are or how you feel about yourself, I hope you haven’t. Your life is just as important as any other human being walking the planet. What I gather from your post is that you feel you too have been discriminated against. You too may possibly live in fear. I wonder, how would you feel if someone told you that you should get over it because they don’t know the uneasy life you’re living. It’s fine not to understand what Black Lives Matter means. It’s fine if you believe that Black Lives Matter is not as important to you as Very Pale Hispanic/Latino lives matter. But understand, that is important to those of us who have a very different reality and that is not meant in any way to be a fist to your stomach. The reality of many Black people is that there are those who treat us as though our lives DON’T matter and we choose to remind them that Black Lives Matter. There are those who have chosen to kill us because we have a bit too much melanin in our skin and to them and so we remind them that Black Lives Matter. I don’t think many of fear our families being asked for green cards unless we are the melanin rich who hail from another land but there are many of us who fear for our families because an officer may just be feeling like they’re not having a good day and someone needs to bear the brunt of that. To those officers we scream BLACK LIVES MATTER. So please understand Ms. Leanna that although you may hear the words, although you may see the hashtags, they may not be meant for you. We all know that ALL LIVES MATTER but there are some who seem to forget that BLACKS fall under that umbrella as well.

Well said! You should never have to apologize for how you feel. One’s opinion is no more or less valid than another. I stand with you and thank you for your openess and honesty. From one black girl to another. #blacklivesmatter!!!!

  34. You go girl! I stand with you. It is NOT OK. I was appalled when I saw the videos where those men were murdered. Yes, cold blooded murder. Both done by police, AND one was Hispanic. I wish I could find the quote from the holocaust. But I did find this: Esther 4:14 English Standard Version
“For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

Replace the word Jews with any minority.

Now is NOT the time to be silent. We have to stand up for each other, for those who cannot stand up for themselves. White, Black and ALL Colors of skin. If we expect to thrive as a free society, none of us can afford to be silent. When we stand together, we become stronger.
I lived through race riots when I was younger. I saw the injustice then. I fought for civil rights back in the day. I thought we had moved so much further to acceptance. Yet, here we are again, fighting the same battle! One of the hardest things I came to realize in my life was this: no matter how hard you fight and how much you win, each generation will continue to fight the same battles and bring their own world view and personality to the table. But the fight will always continue. I don’t know why it has to be this way. Looks like it’s time to get out the boxing gloves again.

Dear CeCe, First of all, your eye make up is beautiful. Secondly, I saw the story on BuzzFeed about your blog and postings. I applaud you for your kindness and your clarity. You are really on to something that I have been sensing for a long time. I believe Sexism & Racism are right on top of each other. Sometimes literally. And all hatred is Self-Hatred manifesting itself it stupid petty ways. I was lucky to grow up in a decent family and not learn mean & insulting worlds and names for anybody. And went to schools that were diverse racially & ethnically even tho we were all little San Francisco Catholics (on Potrero Hill!) I am now a subscriber and look forward to more of your lovely writings.

CeCe, I am sorry to say that I have not read your blog before or seen your videos even though I do quite often look for body positive pieces to read. I have unfortunately found you due to terrible tragedies, after so many have died. I found your video of you speaking about Black Lives Matter and it touched me profoundly. I wanted to thank you for not apologizing for what you said and standing up for it. I wish there were more people like you that could have this impact everywhere. Maybe then more people would not stand for people being killed for no reason. What you did in your past does not define you and if people were being honest with themselves they would realize that they are judging these men that have died in a way they hope never to be judged. I realize that you will probably never read this but I just wanted you to know that I think everything you said was beautiful and spot on. You can’t say All Lives Matter and then turn your back when someone says Black Lives Matter. It is not right. I am a South African and white and I thank you for all that you said. I also love that you used Desmond Tutu’s words. If I may add something Nelson Mandela or to us, Tata, also said; “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” We need to stand together so that we can enhance everyone’s freedom, be they black, white, Hispanic, Asian or any other. Thank you again for your wise words.

  41. CeCe, you are the best. People who relish in hate will do their thing. The rest of us are trying to keep it movin.
