Last week in my Torrid Dressing Room Diary, I mentioned that I can’t pull off everything and I’m okay with that. Not every fashion trend is for me; a good example is fur vests. I put on too much fur and I just look like a muppet who escaped from the streets of sesame.
But anyway, even though I’m fine to say when a trend isn’t for me, I’m also never ever afraid to try a trend. So, today I’m trying out Harem pants. I wasn’t convinced these would look good on me, but… I’m actually into them!
When it came to harem pants I followed three specific rules:
Keep it Simple:
These pants are a statement in themselves, so for my fist pair I didn’t choose a crazy print or a bright color. I went with denim, which feels neutral for me since I knew I could pair with any top/shoe and be fine.
Grab a form fitting top:
Because my pants have a high waist, I found that crop tops or blouses that tucked in easily without bunching were best. This top is from my plus size ankara print set, I thought the pop of print and color was a fun combination.
Don’t spend too much
I got these on a (rare) sale from Jibri, but I wouldn’t suggest starting off with a $150 pair of pants.
Here are some cute options that are budget friendly:
eVogues Plus Size Harem Pant Black via Amazon Fashion
Eileen Fisher via Nordstrom.com
So, what’s the verdict on harem pants? Love ’em, hate ’em… dying to try them? Let me know in the comments!
Honestly, I’m not a fan =(
LOL, it’s cool…
I didnt like the pants at all. The exaggerated “wings” on the sides are horrible. Love you and your dressing room videos though.
Love you too, doll!

Cece, I guess the harem pants are ok, but not sure if the fabric is right. I think a softer more flowing fabric might work better; it’s something about the way they stick out on the side. That’s my humble opinion, but if you like them, go for it! It’s not about what anybody else says anyway! Love all that you do for us PSP!
Yeah, I’ll keep a look out for a less stiff fabric too. A different look, but I’m still up for it! xoxo
I look forward to seeing pictures of what you find in a softer fabric!
OMG..my exact thoughts. I like them in the picture. You look Fab! At the same time seeing you walk in the video, I believe the fabric is not right. I would recommend fabric that drapes well over the hips and flows well with your movement.

I like the pants on you better than them overall. The flare on the sides accentuates your waist and creates an hourglass asthetic.
See, that’s what I thought too– someone else said it did the opposite. The mixed opinions are so funny to me! lol

I don’t think they flatter you, and I don’t think they flatter the model on the Jibri website. And these are harem pants? I think of harem pants as belling out to the ankle like these http://bohemianisland.com/collections/peacock-harem-pants, not bagging way out at just the hips. You have wa-a-a-a-ay cuter outfits than this 🙂
LOL yeah there are different versions, but I get what you’re saying 🙂

Hi…the outfit is not ugly, nor are the pants. I think it’s not complimenting you in a positive way. Probably a taller or longer torso person? I think that maybe what’s throwing a nawww in ur look.
Gotcha!!

I think I would like them better if they weren’t quite so high waisted.

Hi, Cece! I have to agree on the fabric – something softer, more draped – and minus the bow. I’m relatively new to your blog, but you’regreat & hubby and I both enjoy your videos! They open up conversations that I have in my head all the time, but don’t usually think to talk to him about. I value his opinion, and I’ve never met a more supportive guy. And thanks to you, we’re talking about some things that really bug me about my own wardrobe, that I’m now discovering he loves – often for the very reason I’ve been self conscious. It’s liberating and uplifting! Thank you so much for being so adventurous and for sharing that with the rest of us! Love you to pieces! (but keep those britches for hanging out at home! :D)
Carla
That’s AWESOME!! Love that you two are talking and being open… <3

…I don’t like them :-/ something about the wings on the side make it look like you’re about to fly away lol.
I *do* like how you styled them though. And I’m glad you’re not calling the folks who don’t care for them ‘haters’…
Never lol… I love when you girls chime in with your thoughts <3

Thanks, AJ!! xx

I love Jibri and their aesthetic. These pants look great on you, but I think everything looks great on ya! The volume is perfect and I usually shy away from items that are fitted on my belly so the volume is a plus to me! They accentuate your waist and add some va va voom to hips and curves! I love! I have some cotton harems that are now pajamas because they are not flattering in that material on me.The stiffer material adds better structure for harems so in my opinion… WERK! Oh and one word: POCKETS!
Yessss pocketsssssss lol

Fist off I love jibri I have pants and got them hemmed in just short lol. Harlem pants have thatblook on EVERYONE ! So the whole Ugly thing is what it is to them. Moving on from that I’m thinking with heels and a crop top and long duster all one color you know the whole neutral thing will fix it. It’s a great quality piece so don’t let it go to waste and wear the mess out of it. I wear what I want that is morally acceptable. And if it feels good and you love it and it’s within your clothing standards enjoy! I don’t see it as a lost at all.
Boom!

You always look awesome but the pants, in my opinion, aren’t flattering to your shape. Thanks for being a good sport.

I’m on fence. To me, it would be like putting a frame around my stomach.
But I imagine they feel fun to wear & we all need more fun in our lives & that counts for a lot!

I love harem pants and have a few. I actually put the Eileen fisher ones in my cart a few days ago :). I also like Jibri, but the material I’d pass on. Since I’m hippy, I tend to like the harem styles that work with my body. I prefer the harem pants that don’t give me extra on the hip area b/c I have enough on my own (although I did buy the jumpsuit from City chic). More power to you and continue to explore styles that appeal to you!
One of the things I like about america. Your entitled to your own opinion. Personally the pants aren’t for me. However if that’s your choice rock and do you. Be true to you.

You asked for opinions on the harem pants, so here’s mine: I don’t care for them, and don’t think they are flattering on anyone. I think they are one of those fashions that needs to go away, and no matter what size I was, I would never buy them. But if they are making you happy, you should go ahead and wear them.

More power to you for trying new things! I find I have to see things a whole bunch of times before I feel open to them. If you love the pants, wear the pants! You look adorable and confident in everything so…

Like you, I have tried various fashion trends and I can’t seem to pull off harem pants. I like to feel fly in my clothes and I just don’t feel comfortable in harem pants. If you like it wear it 🙂

As a seamstress i can say that, I LOVE the pants on you. I think what troubles people visually is the fact that they’re made from denim or chambray, both of those fabrics love structure and not “cowl”, which is obviously required with harem pants. The exaggeration of your hips is a textile problem(if that’s the sorta thing that bothers you), but you could just smooth that out with you hand or iron. This cut of harem, in jersey or a knit would provide a more relaxed look. I totally agree with a crop top and maybe an open toe or pointed toe shoe to exaggerate and continue the long leg line that the narrow pant leg creates.

I always think of my outfit by foundation…but I’m not talking about bras and spanks. SHOES can make or break an outfit and I think these shoes may have been a bad choice. I mean if you look at it historically, harem pants are typically worn with a lot of the foot showing (bare or sandals). So it’s my opinion that maybe a bright pink heeled sandal would have elevated these pants to a more fashionable level.

I love a lot of your outfits and appreciate your willingness to try bold patterns, creative new looks, and be a trendsetter for a curvy girls. But I am sorry, those pants just scream pleated mom jeans circa 1991.

Ok, so first I think you’re beautiful and I love that you have a passion for fashion and are comfortable enough in your own skin to make bold fashion choices! That being said, I have to say that I just don’t understand the whole Harem look at all. They remind me of a cross between parachute pants and hammer pants but also look like you might be wearing one of those inflatable sumo costumes. I agree that the shoes may not have complimented them at all…the shoes combined with the pants kind of reminded me of Genie in Aladdin except that those shoes were curled at the toe. Also kinda looks like you might be hiding an adult diaper under there…just not the best look on you for me.
But I do love you!! Honest!

Feel like yr wearing a paper bag, potato sack ..sorry just not flattering…as it adds bulk to your frame…not a look yr trying to encourage, at least in the pic for the eileen fisher ones in nordstrom , its a soft material that drapes and hugs the body close

Ha! Harlem pants can rock with you or be very disrespectful! They’re different styles of Harlem pants.. but this pair won’t work for me… only because I have a high butt and I will look like I have on adult pampers lol!!!! But the pants are very cute! But not for my backpack of a butt!

I love harem pants and even have a harem jumpsuit. And although i know it’s not for everyone I love it, so I don’t give a rats ass what the rest of the people think. But I do think that the fabric and the way you wear them is key. Soft flowing fabrics, not to stiff and nice heels is a must for me. I love Jibri clothes (don’t own any however since its to much of a hassle for me to get them in Europe) however I would take in the length of the leg a bit and would wear other shoes. But most of all……you should do what you want, like and love. Just ignore the haters. The only one you need too please is YOU! ?

I agree with many of the ladies here. I think you’re a very lovely woman, who makes many pretty and bold fashion decisions. And I would like to stress that I am one of the last people that should ever be gone to for fashion advice. That being said, when I look at the picture above all I can see is the pockets (?) on the pants, and not you. The high waist does look very flattering though. Like some of the other ladies have stated going with a softer fabric might be less “look at these really cool pants”, and more “look at the lovely woman wearing this amazing fashion statement.” Or maybe even the look that Jennifer Sawyer suggested sounds like it would look really nice.

The harem pants I have don’t stick out like that. They hug my curves. I found them on Citychiconline.com
I think that’s why I have a problem with these. They stick out too much and make you look wider than you actually are. The material should have been more flowing and free. It looks uncomfortable. Mine are really soft. You should check out City Chic.

I am not a fan of these pants. I did adopt the trend last summer and bought a pair that looked hideous on me. I haven’t seen a true plus size woman yet look good in them. Of course this is just my opinion but they are a no for me.
