I Spy: Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome

I saw a Plus Size Princess on the 3 train yesterday. She carried her weight in her stomach/midsection, her skin was a little shiny and I could see the bumps under her chin where she’d shaved away her facial hair. I would be willing to bet money that she had Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. Sadly, I couldn’t be so sure that she knew that she had it. I have PCOS, and while knowing about it doesn’t solve my all of my problems, it does help me understand my body. I think those of you who have been diagnosed will agree that knowing what this issue is changes everything. With PCOS in the picture you dont feel like a total freak…

40 Days No Bread

Easter was last Sunday which meant my 40 days without bread is officially over. I thought I was going to lose my head and go nuts, perhaps doing an Easter brunch binge but strangely, things are different. I did eat a lot of rich food, and I felt gross…. I’ve had the option of eating bread for four days now and I really haven’t gone overboard. And honestly whenever I try to go overboard, I can’t. Robert bought me a box of girl scout “Thin Mint” cookies that have been in my desk drawer for the majority of Lent. After having a bowl of chicken gumbo soup for lunch, I opened the box around 3pm because I was feeling a…

Drop it Like its Hot: Gym + intimidation = Gymtimidation

I’ve had a gym membership since I was in high school but there are still times when I feel like I don’t belong there. Gymtimidation is real, but if we want results we have to move past it. Over the years, there have been many times when I’ve had to tell myself “CeCe, get over it!”: Get over your anxiety about asking for help… Get over your fear of the meat heads in the weight room… get over not wanting to change in the main locker room area (I mean, who really wants to change in a cramped bathroom stall?) Every time I think I’m completely comfortable at my local gym, there’s something new I have to get over. Last…

Drop it Like its Hot: Back on the Wagon (again)

With my lent sacrifice I know that some weight has come off, but when it comes to exercising I’ve fallen off the wagon, hard. I looked at my calendar last Friday and realized that my Miami vacation was in six weeks (eek!) and it was clear that I needed to get back on the wagon quickly. Yesterday morning I packed my gym bag so that I could swim laps after work. Swimming is my favorite way to burn lots of calories efficiently and as a California girl I was basically raised in the water, so its a work out that I really enjoy. I got to the gym and was devastated to see a sign on the elevator door: The…

40 Days No Bread (Week Two): Mood Swings

There’s a scripture, in Matthew I think, that talks about fasting being something that’s between you and God. It basically says that one shouldn’t walk around making a big deal about their sacrifice to everyone they see. “No food for me! I’m fasting… I would love to go to dinner with you but, I’m fasting!” Obviously Lent is a little different, because a lot of people are fasting during this season, but in the back of my mind I assumed that I would be able to do this No Bread thing semi-privately. What I’m learning is that even if the people I’m around don’t know what I’m doing, they sure are seeing the effects of it! Like last week during…

40 Days No Bread Week One: PCOS

Its been one week since Ash Wednesday. One week into the Lenten Season. One week since I’ve had any bread. Giving up bread for Lent is something I’ve wanted to do before, but I was pretty sure that I would fail miserably. I’ve tried the jump start portion of the South Beach diet (where you don’t eat carbs for two weeks) and fell off the wagon in four days. For years I didn’t know why I needed carbs so much. Then when I was in high school I mentioned to my doctor that I only had my period every three months. That, combined with my weight and some other issues (that I’m not quite ready to discuss here) made her…

Drop it like its Hot: The First Ten Pounds (The Remix)

Last night, in an effort to save money… I did my own laundry. *gasp* I know. Before you judge, let me say that New York is made up of two kinds of people; those who do their own laundry and those who send it out. You have to remember that having a washer and dryer in an NYC apartment is unheard of and having laundry in your building is something you cross your fingers for. All of this means that for a city dweller, laundry can easily become the most time consuming chore of the week. Which makes sending laundry out a very easy habit to start. Since moving into my new apartment, where going to the nearest laundromat means…

Drop It Like Its Hot: Me and My Shadow

If you’re following me on twitter (twitter.com/thebiggirlblog) you know that after some unexpected office goodies, I got rid of the calories by going on an extra long walk last night. During the first half of my walk I was lost in my own thoughts, listening to music, not really thinking about the changes I’m trying to make. But on the way back to my apartment, the walk was very different. As I walked along the Hudson River, the combination of the street lights and the sunset placed my shadow right in front of me. I couldn’t stop looking at her. My shadow had my walk, my hair, my build but she didn’t have any of my trouble spots. She was…

Drop it like its Hot: The Honeymoon Period

The beginning of a diet/workout plan is always my favorite… This is the time when I love eating veggies, I feel empowered when I say “No thanks” to brownies and walking uphill at warp speed feels like the best thing in the world. It feels amazing because I can guarantee that when I weigh in, I will see the results on the scale. The pounds melt away so quickly and easily. (Especially if you have a long way to go because the heavier you are, the more calories you burn when exercising). This morning I weighed myself and I’ve dropped two more pounds. Of course I’m happy, but I need to keep reminding myself that this is a lifestyle change.…

Drop it Like its Hot: The First Ten Pounds… are noticed.

It was a random Monday and Robert was standing at my desk during his daily visit. We were quietly talking about everything and nothing when he stopped and looked at me. “You look different,” he said. “Do I?” “Yeah, you do. I don’t know….” I looked at him. He looked at me. “Different, good? or Different… bad?” I asked slowly. “Good… different, good.” He looked at me. I looked at him. I wasn’t sure what to say, so I just kind of shrugged my shoulders and changed the subject. ….One Week Later…. I was wearing pink heels, a black strapless sundress that hit just above my knees and a pink cardigan. I felt pretty, so I didn’t mind that I…
