I Eat Too Much at Home

Happy Monday! I’ve lost the ability to sleep in but I’m so happy to have the day off of work. Usually a day off work means I can watch trashy daytime TV (“you are NOT the father!”) and hang out… with my refrigerator. Staying at home on a weekday can easily become a party with me, Maury and the fridge in heavy rotation. I’ll have breakfast, a snack, lunch, two more snacks and somehow I’ll make a light supper followed by a heavier one late at night (and there will be lots of picking and munching in between all of that). Maybe its just me, but its hard to be at home and not eat. On the other hand, when…

Work Out Wednesday: New Years Resolutions

I mentioned a few posts back that I spent the beginning of 2011 quite sick and in the hospital. For most people that would be a perfect recipe for weight loss, but as a PSP with Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome, spending 10 days in bed right after the holidays meant a ridiculous amount of weight gain for me. Unfortunately, if I’m not constantly working to lose weight with exercise, I will pack on the pounds with no effort at all. So, I started 2011 at my highest weight in a long time but I also started with a new found desire to get back on track. My New Years Resolution before I got sick was to lose 10 pounds in January,…

Work Out Wednesday: Boxing

So many TBGB readers have suggested Zumba to me, so I tried it last week along with my regular dance classes. I liked Zumba, but when the class was over I felt like I hadn’t worked enough. I had been having the same feelings in my dance classes too, it was like my body was craving a more intense workout. My gym offers boxing and kick boxing classes, so I tried those this week and Oh Em GEE! These classes are phenomenal. The more aggressive workout is exactly what I’ve been craving. I was nervous to try the classes because the instructors were men and I was used to aerobics with women, but taking a class with a guy has…

Work Out Wednesday: Thanksgiving!

This morning I stepped out of the shower and onto the scale. I held my breath (as if that would make a difference) and watched the numbers roll around until they settled on a number. I was down TEN POUNDS! I let out a sigh of relief, because I have been working my butt off (literally!) and I was scared that it I wouldn’t see results. I’ve been counting my calories, working out at least three times a week and pushing myself to try new things at the gym so that I get smaller and stronger. When I wrote the first Work Out Wednesday post my goal was to drop 20 pounds before the end of 2010. That was two…

Work Out Wednesday: RED VELVET CAKE!

I’ve been doing really well with my eating. Bringing my lunch to work along with fresh fruit and yogurt has helped me to stay full without gorging myself at the restaurants around my office downtown. Yesterday we celebrated one of my coworkers birthdays in the office. Her department brought in cake. And not just any cake… they brought in a rich red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. In other words, they brought in baked crack. I discovered baked crack red velvet cake a few years ago at a bakery in my neighborhood. I quickly developed a “slice a week” habit that took me weeks to shake. Every Sunday after church, I would walk to the bakery, order a $5.50…

Work Out Wednesday: Portion Control Tricks

I refuse to get on the scale this week. I’ve been sick with a cold since Thursday and haven’t had the energy to do much. If the scale moved in the wrong direction, it might send me over the edge, so I’m just going to skip my weigh in and try to get back on track for next Wednesday. Even though I didn’t do much in the fitness department this week, I have been experimenting with the foods I eat. More specifically the portions. My Dad used to always caution us not to have “eyes that are bigger than your stomach” and I know that’s something that I struggle with. If I buy a block of cheese, I cut huge…

Work Out Wednesday: When You Assume….

When I got to the gym to swim last week, all the lanes were full (full meaning 2, or more swimmers) except for one. I kicked off my sandals near the edge of the pool, waded into the water, and made my way to the lane where a middle aged man was preparing to start his laps. “Hey, do you mind sharing this lane?” I asked. He looked at me. “Maybe you’d be better off in the next lane over,” I looked over and saw two old ladies power walking in the pool. “Um, those ladies aren’t even swimming,” I said, feeling my face get hot with a mix of annoyance and anger. “I know,” he looked at me blankly…

Work Out Wednesday: The Scale Didn’t Move

I hopped on the scale this morning and it didn’t budge. I’m still down 2 pounds from last week, but I didn’t lose anymore… boo! I only got in 2 workout sessions this week because I haven’t been feeling well and my eating could have been better, but I did wake up at 6am on Monday to get another session of running in which was good. Anyway, I’m kinda bummed about not losing weight this week, but I’m going swimming tonight after work. I have to stay motivated even though I didn’t do so well this week… I hope you guys did better than me! This Weeks Work Outs: 2Pounds Lost: 2 out of 20Weekly Goal: lose 3-4 pounds to…

Work Out Wednesday: Running

As I walked into my apartment on Monday, the last thing I wanted to do was work out. I dropped my bag on my bed and collapsed next to it. I lay on my bed staring at the ceiling and after taking a few minutes to breathe, I jumped up and got dressed to work out (I couldn’t skip a workout in the first week of Work Out Wednesdays!). I made my way to my neighborhood park. The air was crisp, but not cold and being outside on a September evening started to feel really good. I walked as quickly as I could and I could feel my body wanting more, so I pumped my arms above my head to…

Work Out Wednesday!

Last Saturday I was talking to one of my (skinny)friends about my struggles with PCOS. “The best way to ensure I don’t have any of the extreme issues like diabetes or infertility is to keep my weight down,” I explained. “Have you been working out lately?” she asked. “Not as much as I should… I’d really like to lose 20 pounds before the year is up.” “Okay,” she replied. “So what are you going to do about it?” It was such a simple question, but it hit me like a ton of bricks. What am I going to do about my weight? I’ve started to embrace my body and the fact that I will never be a size 2 (I…
