It’s Too Small for You, Right? …right.

I walked into the nail salon on Saturday and the large bottle of water I drank on the way there caught up with me. Something you should know about me is that I despise public restrooms, but my bladder is tiny so I’m forced to use them often. This has made me somewhat of a bathroom connoisseur. I’m the girl who asks her friends “how’s the bathroom?” before I go inside. When I’m interviewing for jobs, I judge companies on how their bathrooms are. (I truly believe that you can tell how much a company cares about its employees by the way their bathrooms are maintained) but I digress…. Anyway, having to use the ladies room at my nail salon…

The Comparison Trap

“Am I the biggest girl here?” is a torturous game I used to play with myself when I was growing up. I would ask myself if I was the biggest girl in the room and then look around to see what the answer was. 99% of the time, the answer was yes. What did I do with that information? I just used it to fuel the flames of insecurity that burned quietly inside of me. At BlogHer, Jennipher Walters, creator of fit bottomed girls discussed something called The Comparison Trap. She mentioned how it can be detrimental to us because it can really skew the way we see ourselves. Her words really hit home for me because I’ve spent years…

I’m Speaking (twice!) at #BlogHer13 in Chicago

Its crazy to think that I started TheBigGirlBlog as a hobby to keep me sane while I auditioned for plays in NYC… or that I wrote it anonymously for years. Although I feel like I know so many of you via the comments section, twitter, facebook and emails it wasn’t till this moment at the BlogHer 2012 fashion show that anyone knew what I looked like: While some of my friends are playing Candy Crush and sites like Http:/GalaBingo.com, who knew that my online hobby could bring me into such an amazing space with amazing women doing amazing things. I am so thankful to the BlogHer community for embracing me and encouraging me to do more, so when they asked if I…

Surfing the Confidence Wave (Confidence is… Complicated)

“Just get me from the boobs up,” I instructed as I posed for a photo in the sand. I was spending my day by the water with Meaghan, from LittleLimeDress, Beck, from Manfattan and a few bottles of Teqava (the sparkling tequila cocktail we served at the #NYCurvyCloset Sale). Shooting from the boobs up is my go-to pose for pictures on the beach. It hides my stomach but still lets “The Twins” have their moment. “CeCe, you should really do some full body shots, you look great” Meaghan said. I shook my head, “no” while Beck snapped photos of me. It wasn’t going to happen. Am I happy to frolic around the ocean, jump in the waves and flirt with lifeguards in…

Fat: The Last Acceptable Prejudice– Thoughts???

I’m black, I’m a woman and I’m fat, all three have caused me moments of painful discrimination. I’ve been called the “N” word and the “B” word, but when I’ve been called the “F” word (Fat), it’s always… different.   I know that we’re all owning “fat” as a word and its nothing to be ashamed of, so that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about how size prejudice isn’t acknowledged as an actual thing that happens. If I told you that I was 99% sure I didn’t get a job because I was black or a woman, there is a specific course of action I could take to address that. But if I told you I was passed…

“Tigger”, “Tenderheart” & Other Characters Who’ve Hit on Me

“Look, Tigger!” my baby sister cried out as we made our way through Disneyland. I was 15 and Denise, my middle sister was 11. Disneyland is fun no matter how old you are, but Nikki, our baby sister had just turned 4, so the park was super magical for her and she was running the show. When she spotted Tigger frolicking near the bushes, we immediately rushed over to take a picture with him and our parents followed with the camera. We huddled around him, I ended up on his left side while my sisters were on the right. Tigger put his arms around us as we posed. Just as my Dad began snapping photos, I heard a whistle from inside Tiggers costume. You…

+Size Picture Tricks & #PSPfit Updates

Sooo… can we talk about taking pictures as a Plus Size Princess for a second? I know a lot of us shy away from the camera, I was never like that (can’t you tell? lol) But there was a time when I would only take “selfies” at an upward angle, from my boobs up, nothing lower. Even when I took photos with friends, I’d have them huddle up around me and I’d get that camera tilted *just* right. That angle made my face look slimmer, showcased The Twins and hid the rest of my body. Do any of you PSPs find yourselves using that angle as a go-to? I had to force myself to stop because I knew it was…

He Called Me “Precious” …Thoughts???

This past Saturday I was standing on the corner of South and 4th streets in Philadelphia after seeing a fabulous concert with my sister. I felt comfy/cute in a cozy pink sweater, black mini-skirt and knee high suede boots. While attempting to hail a cab back to our hotel, a car full of people sailed past us and a voice cried “Heyyyyy Precious!” from the back window. He was talking to me. (If you don’t know who/what Precious is you can read up on the movie here and get images of the actress who plays Precious here). In the spirit of everything that we talk about here on TBGB; loving ourselves, knowing that our weight doesn’t define us, etc. I’d love to…
