Plus Size Fashion: Do You Like it on the Model… or Me?

October 22 2015 | CeCe Olisa

If you’re anything like me, you have a bag full of clothes in your closet, or the trunk of your car that you meant to return, but you didn’t (because mailing things is just annoying) and suddenly the 30 day return window is long gone and now you have a collection of awesome clothes that just don’t look right on you.

Or maybe you see a plus size blogger in something you’d seen online, and you said to yourself “I wanted to buy that, but I wasn’t sure how it would look on me…”

I totally get it.

That’s the reason I’ve decided to bring this idea back to the blog, I’m going to show you an item on a model, I’m going to explain how I made my purchase (what size I chose, color, width, etc.), then I’ll show the item on me and you can decide if you like it on the model… or on me.

Sound Good? Okay, let’s begin!

SimplyBe Shift Dress with Detachable Collar

Here’s the dress on the model.

I love it because it’s got that vintage/mod feel that is so much fun! I like that the collar is detachable because I can probably mix it into other outfits which gives me more for my money.

I knew right away that I would have to order this dress in a larger size for a few reasons:

  • I’m 5’10 and I know from past purchases that SimplyBe’s dresses run short. Getting it a size bigger would ensure that my bum wouldn’t show
  • I could tell that the fabric was pretty stiff and so there wouldn’t be any “forgiveness” if the dress was too small
  • I have a large bust and carry weight in my tummy, getting a larger size would guarantee that the dress would cling to my boobs and then flare out perfectly

Here’s the dress on me. (Shoes Here,  Anti-Chafing balm for inner thighs Here)

Normally I wear a size 20 in dresses, but I ordered a size 24 (I figured I could get it taken in at the tailor if it was super baggy). In the end, the dress is baggy in the back, but if stiff fabric is too clingy I start to get that “Incredible Hulk” feeling and that’s not cute. So, the sizing works for me.

Anyway, between my Grandmother Rosa, Tap Dancing and #PSPfit I’ve got strong legs, so a dress like this is a good excuse to show them off before it gets too cold here in NYC.

Now, it’s time for you to vote: Do you like it on the model… or me?

You, most deff! I really wish that more plus size clothes mags would use actual plus size models.. and I don’t mean a size 8-10.

I definitely like it better on you – Gives me a much better idea of how it might look on me. When companies use smaller models it makes it terribly difficult to imagine their clothing on my own body.

Much better seeing it on you. I read on Buzzfeed that a lot of “plus size” models wear padding so that they look curvier than their size 12 or 14 bodies actually are. But between that fake padding and Photoshop, you never see a “real” plus size body in the clothing. Seeing clothes on unretouched bloggers is much more helpful. PS: You have beautiful legs! So jealous! 🙂

It looks shapeless on the model but on you it highlights your curves. I would consider buying now that I have seen it on you.

That’s a no-brainer–the dress is WEARING YOU, CeCe, and you look lovely! You can tell that the dress is TOO BIG for the model. She’s practically swimming in it, and has also probably been pinned into it. :/

I prefer seeing bodies that at least somewhat resemble mine when looking at clothes online for plus size retailers. It irks me that almost every (plus) model is usually 5 feet 9 inches, less than a size 16/18, no tummy, and hips or either is a “straight size” model (such as the one above) that has been padded to appear larger or the clothes are pinned onto their frames, which is basically deceptive advertising. UGH! How annoying!

Hey you got me thinking… the “Model” is the three-dimensional representation of the proposed structure, typically on a smaller scale than the original…so Yes CeCe you bring the garment to full scale. I like seeing what I might buy this way. Thanks

People are going to bitch at me but I have to say the model. I think the designer’s intention was for this to look more like a shift but on you its more of a fit and flare(not a bad thing!) and it looks tight in the bust and the arms, not at all as comfy looking as the model. It looks good on you, but with the collar, I think a looser looking fit is better. As always….your legs look flawless!

    1. My2CentsWorth1953

Not gonna “bitch” at you…just disagree. Whatever the designers intent, there is no pizazz on the other model. It looks bland, lifeless and matronly. I hear what others are saying about the lack of give in the bodice on CeCe. That said, between the two, I choose CeCe.

Your legs are hot! I think it seems a little tight across the shoulders on you tho – is it uncomfortable? Maybe I’m just prone to worrying about that area because personally, it’s somewhere I have a hard time finding a good, off-the-rack, fit. I love that you wore such a short dress tho – #teamshortdressdontcare for the win!

    1. Amy

This is what I was thinking as well. While you still look great, CeCe, I feel like I’ve seen much more flattering dresses on you, than this one. So, I’m going with the model for this one.

Normally I would shy right away from anything in this shape because I am shaped the same as you but after seeing you in it, I have to say I love the way it looks on you! I would definitely try a dress like this on in the future. Looking awesome and always inspiring!

Cute! I like it more on you. I personally think that it’s a good fit on you and the model, but it is all about the look the person wearing it is trying to achieve. It looks nice on you and over sized somewhat on the model.

I think that you, CeCe bring the look of the dress to life! And your legs look great! The lace collar is nice on you, it accents your face. I do think that the shoulders and bust don’t fit you as well as they might. But, you win – your figure shows (and sells) the dress better. The model is too thin and I don’t like her pigeon-toed pose … You have a lovely womanly quality that the model doesn’t. I wish some retailers would present their merchandise on true curvy models. After all, that is their customer. Thanks for asking for our opinions!

Definitely you. You give the dress personality. You totally rock the dress with your curvaceous figure. Keep rocking it girl!

Please keep this series going!!! I love the dress on you because of the expression on your face and how it skims your silhouette perfectly! I wouldn’t look twice at this on the model. MORE! LOL!

I do think you – CeCe – look much better in the dress than the model – like others have said it highlights your curves and your legs are awesome and this length was made for you. My only criticism of the dress itself is that it was not tailored for larger breasts and so it looks sort of baggy in the shoulders and tight across the bust on you. The model has smaller bust line so it lays flatter.

I think you give the dress more life. It looks more like it’s made for a person on you and on the model it looks like the dresses for cutsie babydolls.

Way better on you. You do have nice legs. Nicer than the model I’d say. No offense to the nice looking model.

Not a big fan of the dress. It is shapeless – and your nice shape is lost. The collar (IMO) looks matronly.

The dress you wore to curvycon and the moto jackets with jeans – love love LOVE those on you.

I am new to your blog. Just want to say you are so gorgeous. I am guessing not just on the outside.

The dress is cute. I like it on you a bit better than the model. There is the saying” YOU wear the dress, don’t let the dress wear you”. You got this CeCe.
