Early last year I was sitting at my corporate job, g-chatting with my blogger boo, Chastity from GarnerStyle about our blogs and our readers and the plus size community in general. I wish I remembered how we got on the topic of meet-ups with our readers, but suddenly our g-chat messages were flying.
What if we did an epic meet up with all of our blogger boo’s at one time??
What if the meet-up was open to anyone who wanted to come??
What should we call it??
How about “the CURVY con”? Wait– is that website domain name available? YES!
TheCURVYcon was something that we’d day dream about from time to time. We had no money and events are expensive, so we figured we could get the event up and running in two or three years.
Fast forward to June 21st, 2014, when Gwen Devoe announced that Full Figured Fashion Week was not going to continue anymore. FFFWeek was something the plus size community looked forward to every year and with it being gone, there would be a huge void. We wouldn’t have a time and place for us all to get together anymore.
Suddenly theCURVYcon seemed more urgent. It went from feeling like something we thought would be fun, to something we absolutely needed to do.
So, we got to work and here’s where things got mind-blowingly amazing.
We made a plan: We said, we’re going to do a one day conference where we bring in as many plus size bloggers, youtubers and celebrities as we can together for panels and discussions requested by our readers. Then we’ll create a curvy mall with dressing rooms so that our readers can actually try on clothes in person instead of guessing their sizes online.
We reached out: We emailed our blogger boo’s to see if they would even participate in something like this and the support was overwhelming– I mean, GabiFresh was the first blogger to sign on as a panelist. Then Grammy Nominated Gospel Artist Kierra Sheard, then Glee Actress/Dancing with the Stars champion, Amber Riley (what???).
We raised money: Chastity and I hosted a huge online closet sale, where we literally sold the clothes out of our closets in order to raise our seed money for theCURVYcon and you (our readers) bought every last item. Then we matched that money with some of our personal finances and we were able to choose a date, start putting down deposits and creating a website.
Then you (our readers) came through again when you purchased tickets the day they became available. You sold out our platinum level tickets in 5 hours!! (Special shout out to my #PSPfit girls, I see so many of your names on the ticketed list, thank you).
Side Note: FFFWeek decided to come back for 2015 and our schedules line up perfectly! People doing both events don’t have to make two trips to NYC, no one planned for the aligned events but I’m so glad its working out (whoop! whoop!)
So now, here we are a few days away from #theCURVYcon. I never would have imagined that we’d be able to get this event up and running in a year, but on Saturday it is happening. All of the lost sleep and anxiety will be worth it when you girls walk through the doors– we can’t wait!
