How to Wear a Plus Size Tutu

November 7 2014 | CeCe Olisa

When I first got my plus size tutu I knew I loved it, but I wasn’t quite sure how to wear it. With time and practice I’ve learned that its a pretty versatile piece that can be styled up or down depending on where I’m going. This is one of my favorite pieces because even as my personal style evolves, this skirt still makes me feel amazing.

Here are three different ways I like to wear my tutu and if you’re looking for a plus size tulle skirt, I’ve got links for you below!

Putting a bodysuit on under my tutu creates an instant cocktail dress. I’ve worn this look for singing gigs and for more formal events. I could definitely see this as a New Years Eve outfit. To add color, I swapped out the black satin sash that comes with the skirt for a thick leather belt in burgundy.

Dressing my tutu down with a crop top and chuck taylor’s make it feel more casual and fun. This would be a fun look for brunch with friends or even a concert. For some reason this outfit made me want to ride a skateboard lol side note: I always get my crop tops from the skinny section in a size large. They have some cute ones here

My most versatile way to wear a tutu is with printed tops. I’ve yet to find a printed top that looks bad with my tutu, sometimes I pair my tulle skirts with vintage silk tops, polka dot tops, bright pink tops and my newest way to have fun is mixing in my favorite Ankara print tops! For me this would be a great birthday party look, its fun but still comfy! I tied this shirt into a not for even more flare and kept the shoes simple with pointy flats…

Soooo… would you wear a plus size tutu? Which look/style is your favorite?

Thank you! I have purchased 3 (yes, that’s right!) tutu/tulle skirts: one knee length, one long and one that’s a mermaid with a stretch body to the knee then the tulle starts…and haven’t figured out how to wear any of them! Now, thanks to you! I’m gonna wear one(the knee length) tonight! Woot! Woot!

Why do you wear your skirts so high? I find that wearing bottoms at the actual waist is much more flattering than wearing “waistlines” directly below the bust.

      1. klynb

But with your prominence in the plus size blog world, the manufacturers (I refuse to call them designers because they never sell anything new) will insist that we all want to wear our waistlines that high and not sell anything else.

I can tell you’re passionate about this, so you probably dont realize that your comments are a bit hurtful. I dont think I need to explain (but I will) that I actually have a long torso/high waistline. I do not have the perfect hour glass shape and having to defend it makes me feel like I’m being body shamed which I am pretty sure is not your intention. I dont know your body, so I would never tell you where your waistline is– I guess I’d ask that you’d offer me the same courtesy. xx

          1. klynb

Actually, it’s not you that upsets me re: raised waistlines. It’s that pretty much every plus size line is doing nothing but raised waistlines, which do not work on short women with large busts. I’m upset that almost every plus size manufacturer is catering to you and leaving me out of the picture.

Thank you for highlighting how to wear this skirt. I’m leaving for Vegas to celebrate my bday and this is that “it factor” I was missing for one of my night time looks. Since it’s so last minute-heading to Pinterest to make. DIY version and will pair with a bodysuit. So Excited!

I honestly thought that the tutu could only be pulled off by dancers or an extra proof on a wedding gown. You’ve completely proven me wrong, and I thank you for that. You look lovely in all of these looks, but my favorite would have to be the floral. It could just be the way you’re posed because it’s certainly a great shot of you, but I think the pop of color is what makes the difference.

Yay someone else who likes tutus 🙂
I’ve just stumbled across your blog, it’s really nice reading something that isn’t trying to attack anybody (the ‘all plus sized people should be ashamed of themselves’..’ yeah well, you’re all awful cos you’re skinny and look like boys’ brigade), slight tangent there sorry, anyway, back to the actual point, tutus are awesome, and your outfit ideas are lovely

I love, love, love the cocktail look. When I was younger and much tinier, I wore a dress that looked like that to a wedding. Ever since I have wished I could pull it off again, but now I feel like I could!! 🙂

Question: I looked at the tulle skirt on your link for eshakti, and their’s ins’t nearly as full looking as yours (which I think really just makes the skirt soooo fab on you and just in general). Did u wear any type of petticoat/crinoline or tulle slip underneath?

FLAWLESS! I love all the looks but the sporty ensemble is my favorite. I’ve been considering a tutu for my 30 birthday. I wanted a high low tutu but haven’t been able to find one, think I may make one. Thx for being an inspiration. Much! 😘

Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a 30 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now destroyed and she has 83 views. I know this is totally off topic but I had to share it with someone!
