What is a Swing Dress? | Plus Size Fashion | Summer Style

June 13 2014 | CeCe Olisa

A modern swing dress is a flowy dress that still has an A-line shape. Instead of the top part of the “A” shape hugging your waist, it often will hug your chest and then the fabric will bell out from there. This gives the dress lots of movement potential…. the dress will “swing” when you walk or dance!

With a swing dress and two simple accessories, I was able to put together a dressy/comfy Saturday outfit that’s perfect to wear from a daytime bachelorette manicure party straight into an evening birthday dinner for one of Roberts friends. Easy Peasy!

If you hate wearing shape wear in the summer, these dresses are perfect. Also, depending on the fabric, you can make a swing dress casual or formal. I have some in cotton and denim. I ordered this plus size swing dress on ASOS, these Wide Width flats from Zappos, and snagged this Rebecca Minkoff bag in NYC.

What do you think of swing dresses? Would you/Could you/Have you put one on?

It looks cute on you. On me…not so much. I find that my clothes look better on me when it is structured and it fits my body perfectly. However this looks really comfortable!

I used to feel the same way, but the modern cut still has like a loose structure to it. I’m trying not to be in bodycon dresses every time I go out haha

        Lol! I won’t do a bodycon dress. Way too form fitting… I need a happy medium, I think I want a skater dress… Lol

This looks great on you! I wish I could pull something like this off. Sadly, it is empire maxi dresses for this pear frame. And I need to ask – is Rebecca Minkoff your fave handbag designer? You have a few of her bags right?

    1. CeCe Olisa

Haha, good eye! She’s a fave for two reasons 1.) Her designs are the perfect size for my high maintenance daily life (even this clutch fits so much stuff) 2.) I’ve been able to find her bags in my price range!

Yeah… I have one of her Cupid’s (not in blue, don’t worry!) And I am looking forward to getting a lot of use out of it this Fall. And it does hold a ton!

As someone who carries her weight on her stomach, I love and hate swing dresses. Love because I can finally buy a dress that fits my top properly and I can sit down without any constriction; hate because when wearing them, people have assumed I’m preggo. Urgh.

I am top heavy and feared swing dresses as I never want to look preggers lol however if you wear a thin belt it pulled the dress in and looks very nice.
