Dating on a Diet: Portion Control

Last week I got a text from Robert: Wanna grab some late night pancakes? The text couldn’t have come at a more interesting time.

1.) I was sweating my behind off on the elliptical machine

2.) I was watching The Biggest Loser while I worked out

The combination of those things made me extra aware of my decision. On one hand, Robert and I hadn’t seen each other over the weekend and I missed him. On the other hand I was in the middle of a great workout session and I didn’t want to sabotage it with a meal of carbs and sugar. I knew there had to be a way to have my (pan) cake and eat it too, so I sent Robert a text agreeing to meet up, then I began to formulate a plan.

I reminded myself that 90% of me was going to spend time with Robert and 10% of me was going for the pancakes. Instead of thinking about how yummy a plate carbs drenched in syrup would be, I started thinking about the more protein heavy things I could get, like an omlette with veggies and maybe some turkey bacon. I also knew that since Robert supports my healthy lifestyle choices he would probably let me have a single pancake from his plate.

A few hours later, Robert picked me up and we headed to the new IHOP that opened here in the city. I ignored the delicious looking photo of their “cinni-stack pancakes” and noticed that they had an option of Egg substitute, 2 turkey bacon strips and 2 small pancakes.

I ordered it and gave myself kudos for sacraficing a real IHOP meal. I accepted the deprivation of a minimal meal and told myself that it would be worth it when I jumped on the scale later.

The funny thing is– after eating the meal, I didn’t feel deprived at ALL!

In my head, I was doing something extreme by only eating two pancakes, but I’m starting to realize that eating 5 pancakes smothered in cinnamon glaze and whipped cream is the extreme choice. Having the 2 small pancakes was just enough and adding the egg substitute and turkey bacon totaled around 400 calories. I think the Cinni-stack pancakes were 900+ calories.

Its a lesson I learn and re-learn all the time, but so much of what I eat is “in my head” I would never imagine that a carb-addict like me would be satisfied after 2 small pancakes, but I was!

I just need to remember that and keep ordering smaller portions, I know I’ll be surprised by how little I really need.

P.S. I lost 3 pounds this week!

  13. It’s funny actually, because I’ve noticed that if I use a smaller plate, and therefore have a smaller portion despite the fact that the plate looks full, I end up eating less and feeling satisfied. If I take a large plate and it looks empty it’s like I’m already frustrated with the portion and already feel deprived! I think those small things may make a difference in a weight loss program.

I know what you mean, when I met my husband I wore a 12, now seven years later I’m struggling to get out of a 26. We are New Yorkers so a lot of what we do is eat. But luckily I’ve recently lost 20pounds and am going for more!

I am new to your blog but this one her really hits home gor me. I have recently started my weight lose journey and when I tell you that I am addicted to restuarant rolls/biscuits please believe my first week I felt like a drug addict need that quick fix. Now I have gone out to several of my favorite places and have not had one roll nor have I made any at home. I really believe all this time it was mind control.

Great post and spot on about the five pancakes being the extreme choice. Eating just half of what you crave is usually enough. My mother goes as far as eating one half of a bonbon with her coffee. Extreme? Mmm… maybe but it works for her.
