Work Out Wednesday: Boxing

So many TBGB readers have suggested Zumba to me, so I tried it last week along with my regular dance classes. I liked Zumba, but when the class was over I felt like I hadn’t worked enough. I had been having the same feelings in my dance classes too, it was like my body was craving a more intense workout.

My gym offers boxing and kick boxing classes, so I tried those this week and Oh Em GEE! These classes are phenomenal. The more aggressive workout is exactly what I’ve been craving.

I was nervous to try the classes because the instructors were men and I was used to aerobics with women, but taking a class with a guy has proven to be a lot more fun. We start off doing group exercises like jumping jacks and push ups and then we spar with the instructor one at a time. These male instructors yell for me to kick higher, punch them harder and jump higher, but the do it in the most supportive way. Last night the boxing instructor came over to me while I was doing jab-hook combinations. After he showed me how to use my entire body with every punch, he winked at me and said “Be aggressive! Don’t worry about looking cute, you’ve already got that part down!”

By the time I leave class, I’m exhausted, when I wake up the next morning, I’m sore and… its awesome!

Anyway, last week I hit the gym three times (I even went on Thanksgiving!) and I think my workouts balanced out my Turkey Day binge because, I didn’t lose or gain any weight this week.

    I’ve Tried kick boxing and i love it as well…The only difference is that i don’t feel sore the next morning lol, I feel really good.

    I’ve been doing Jillian Michael’s videos and her background is kick boxing and I think they called it mixed martial arts – so there’s a lot of boxing in her routines. I LOVE it! If you want an at home workout option for the winter – Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism is great!

    I used to actually *instruct* a kick boxing class! Needless to say I was in the best shape of my life. Your post motivates me to start my Monday with a workout, a step in the right direction! Thanks CeCe!

    I am a lover, not a fighter. However, I do like the idea of women kicking and punching the crap out of stuff that isn’t me. =)

    Seriously, I’ve kickboxed before and it was fun and exhausting, high recommend it to anyone looking to release pent up agression and have fun!

    I just found your blog recently and I’m inspired. I’m a supporter of the Fat Acceptance movement, but recently I was in the hospital for the first time in my life because I had blood clots in my legs and one had released to my lung.

    It was terrifying knowing I could have died. One huge risk factor is being overweight…so it’s time to tackle this.

    As I said, I’m inspired. Three years ago I lost 60 pounds through a strict reduced calorie diet and major exercising (I’m talking 6 days a week, at least 1.5 hours a day…this was insane). I’ve slowly put all the weight back on because the way I went about losing it was not sustainable. No one can live on 1200 calories a day and 1.5 hour workouts 6 days a week.

    I’ve just been so scared to try again because I want fast results but realize it’s going to take so much time to get to a healthy body size.

    I’m definitely going to be following your blog – especially the exercise section. And hopefully being involved will help me to stay motivated!

    I’ve tried boxing last year and I enjoyed it, too! It’s a plus that I’m dating a boxing trainer (yeah, he’s my trainer) so I can get a hug when I need one hihi.

    In my case, I find it hard to fall asleep after the workout. It makes my mind active at the middle of the night!
