Flirting At The Gym

I had been swimming steadily for twenty minutes. The pool wasn’t too crowded, so I had a lane to myself which was nice. As I sailed across the pool, I lifted my head occasionally to take a deep breaths as my arms and feet propelled me forward. After 40 minutes, I’d had my fill of cardio and made my way to the ladder on the side of the pool.

I pulled myself out of the water, grabbed my towel and began to dry off. “Excuse me,” I heard a mans voice say behind me. I stepped forward to move out of his way, but instead of passing me, he stopped in front of me. “You’re a really good swimmer,” he said with a smile.

“Th-thanks,” I stuttered, trying not to stare. The man standing in front of me was eye candy at its best. He had one of those effortlessly amazing bodies; not super muscular, but toned to perfection. New York City is a single girls playground, but as a Plus Size Princess I had always considered the gym to be no-man’s land. Guys flirted at the gym, just not with me.

“Have you been swimming for a long time?” He continued, tossing his towel from one hand to the other. Hmmm, maybe he wasn’t flirting. Maybe he just enjoyed talking about swimming

“Um, yeah… I kind of grew up in the water,” I replied pulling my towel around my body like a strapless dress so I wouldn’t feel so naked.

“That’s really cool. I really want to swim more, but I’m not that good…”

“Oh,” I laughed with a mix of nerves and confusion. And as the beautiful man in front of me continued to talk about learning how to swim, I just nodded, smiled and waited for the obligatory “nice to meet you” dismissal.

But it never happened.

He continued to shuffle back and forth in his water proof Adidas sandals. He kept asking me questions about swimming and in between questions, he made little jokes and drop tidbits of information about himself (His name was Joey, he was a culinary school student, he lived in Brooklyn).

Maybe he’s gay! I thought to myself, but a quick look at his knee length swim trunks spoke to the contrary. The gay swimmers at my gym all wore Speedos or tiny little boy shorts. This guy was dressed like a surfer. Then he began to ask me about things that had nothing to do with swimming; “How old are you?”, “What do you do?”, “Have you lived in New York for a long time?”

I answered his questions as I tried to wrap my head around the fact that I was being hit on, at the gym… in my bathing suit.

“Well,” he looked me in the eyes, “maybe we could meet up and you can help me with my swimming. I really want to get better.”

“Um, sure…”

“That’d be awesome, what days are you usually here?”

“Um, it changes every week”

“Okay, well… maybe I could get your number?”

“Okay.” I was stunned.

“Wait right here, I’ll get my phone from my locker,” he rushed through the mens locker room doors and 45 seconds later, he was back with his cell phone. I gave him my number.

By the time I got home, he’d sent me a text message saying it was nice to meet me. Who knows if anything will come of things with Joey, but I would never in a million years have imagined that a girl like me would meet a guy at the gym.

Life is full of surprises.

I just keep looking forward to your blog post. They keep me going every week… every day… Btw Cece, you never mentioned what size are you currently and with gym-ing, you would like to drop to a what size? I am currently a UK size 22-24 i guess, also in the gym scene recently (well .. finally after stopping for 6 mths!!) Hope to hear from you soon! Take care and have fun gym-ing!

  3. this post was awesome. i love when life gives us little surprises that may be absolutely meaningless in the grand scheme of life, but lifts our spirits and gives us a warm, tingly feeling.

and for the record, i would have reacted the same way. i’m so in gym mode when i’m working out. which i haven’t done lately but reading your posts about your workouts are inspiring me to get focused on it for 2011.

congrats on the weight loss, ma’am!

  4. OMG, this is going to sound extremely corny, but I was cheesing the whole time I was reading this blog! I LOVE IT! I wonder if Joey has a twin or cute friend that may be from Upstate New York…lol joking! Yay for u, Cece!

  5. That’s so awesome, I’m happy for you. My expectations of being approached at the gym are low because it’s not when I’m looking my best! I bet you felt amazing afterwards!

  6. You know, as a fellow PSP I too have been a bit shocked and confused when someone who I would consider way out of my league begins to talk and flirt with me. Although it has never happened to me at the gym, it is weird nonetheless.

But recently I’ve been thinking: why shouldn’t hot guys flirt with me? I’m beautiful and friendly and have a great personality. So what if I’m a little bigger than other girls. So I decided to change things.

Recently I have made a conscious effort to make eye contact and smile at guys I usually never would. And guess what? It makes a difference! I’m approached more by guys and guys remember me. The next time we pass each other, he is the one who initiates the smile. I never thought that maybe those guys don’t look at me because I don’t look at them. Maybe I just come off as a total bitch who is too full of herself to notice anyone else. Maybe it’s not my body but rather my insecurity with my body that keeps them away.

So keep on swimming and never think that a guy is out of your league. From what I’ve read on your blog (and believe me I’ve read the entire thing) you are a beautiful, talented, successful woman who is beyond the whole “league” thing anyway. Leagues are self-imposed and therefore can only be erased by you. Don’t worry about it! Joey would be lucky to have you.

  7. That is wonderful and an inspiration to me because recently I met this super cute Italian guy online and he has been trying to meet me since I moved. I have been nervous because he is like you swimmer man describe in perfect shape and I am a size 14. I think he would be turned off if he met me so I keep making excuses. What do you propose I do?

  8. When I was larger, I literally avoided situations like these. There was no way in hell that I would let myself believe for a millisecond that someone hot could actually be into me. Even when I’ve lost weight, I’m still flabbergasted when guys like that approach me. I look for the quickest way out.
Good for you. You handled it well and now he has your number. I’m so excited to hear about this πŸ˜€ If you see any more of that eye candy, send it this way please πŸ˜‰

  9. I’m a blog stalker…I’ve been reading, but I never comment. As a big girl myself I just had to smile the whole way through this post. Yay for the Joey’s of the world that realize you are beautiful and talented just the way you are. Keep us posted πŸ™‚

  10. When I was younger, I used to go to 24 hour fitness to use the elliptical. I was always dressed in a baggy t and leggings, no makeup etc but often had men engaging in conversation with me. I always figured that they were just being polite but later, when I started to date a personal trainer, he said that alot of his colleagues were interested in women who “looked like women”. I’m still annoyed that I wasn’t confident enough then to capitalize on the situation. I was a size 22 then and wasn’t that confident…
